November 16

Bay Scholars supporters filled the Julia Morgan Ballroom with gratitude at the organization’s fifth annual luncheon, Giving Thanks by Giving Back. Bay Scholars provides financial support to low income students, facilitating a strong, college prep education at 12 private partner schools. Founder and President (and Gazette owner!) Clint Reilly welcomed guests to the packed ballroom, followed by Samir Hooker and Eric Greer, two inspiring Bay Scholars who shared personal stories of trial and triumph with grace (there wasn’t a dry eye in the house). Greer gave special thanks to Executive Director Caitlin Curran Kavanagh, who shared the organization’s profound impact. To date, Bay Scholars has awarded over $4 million in scholarships to deserving students in the area. Guests then enjoyed a fireside chat led by Janet Reilly with honored guest Xavier Becerra, California’s attorney general, who noted the parallels between his own path and that of the Bay Scholars. Other supporters in the crowd included co-chairs Dede Wilsey, Susan and John Sobrato, BJ Cassin, Annie and John Malcom, Judy and George Marcus, Joan and Robert McGrath, and Patricia and Michael Kelly, among others.
