With Drawn Arms: Glenn Kaino and Tommie Smith
In 1968, at the Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, San José State University runner Tommie Smith raised a gloved fist during the medal ceremony to protest human rights abuses around the world, and to bring international attention to the struggle for civil rights in the United States. This act of protest, which still reverberates today, is explored in a series of collaborations between Smith and Los Angeles-based conceptual artist Glenn Kaino.

Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963-1983
This internationally acclaimed exhibition, organized by Tate Modern, celebrates art made by Black artists during two pivotal decades when issues of race and identity dominated and defined both public and private discourse. The de Young’s presentation includes a focus on Bay Area artists whose work promoted personal and cultural pride, collective solidarity and empowerment, and political and social activism.

Chang Dai-Chien: Painting from Heart to Hand

Elad Lassry probes and disrupts photographic images and prescribed modes of looking to analyze the relationship between objects and their representations. Using various elements such as wire and stainless steel ball bearings to obscure images, Lassry alters the flatness and framing of his pictures to destabilize how we engage with photography.

Gugu Drum Group
This high-energy ensemble from Shanghai is renowned around the world for its appearance in the 2008 Beijing Olympic opening ceremonies. The group uses percussion to weave together ancient Chinese stories. In this performance, old proverbs and fables such as “King Quin & His Troops,” “Bull & Tiger,” and “Women Generals of Yang Family” are brought to life through epic drumming and colorful costumes.
