Golden Gate State of Mind

By Erin Carlson

Bob David spent 30 years as the design director at the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, where he’d often photograph the spectacular, bird’s-eye views from atop the city’s crown jewel—the bridge, of course, which celebrates its 80th anniversary on May 27. He loves being associated with the Golden Gate, an international attraction for shutterbugs both professional and amateur, but perhaps no other photographer in the world has seen the icon through David’s lens. Semiretired, David continues to snap stunning images of the landmark and document the ongoing seismic retrofit project to support the structure’s survival in the face of another strong earthquake.
