Raise Your Glass

Whether searching for groundbreaking quotes to drive us or scouring the biography sections of the bookstore, the women and men of our history influence—for better or for worse—different aspects of our lives. Bespoke Collection, the artisan purveyor of wines such as the notable Right Bank Bordeaux-inspired wines of Napa Valley’s Blackbird Vineyards and Argentina’s Recuerdo Wines, wanted to celebrate these moments in history with a new Collectors Anthology from its AERENA Wines.

Inspired by Teddy Roosevelt’s powerful Man in the Arena speech, the 2015 Daring Greatly Chardonnay ($42) is crafted from a single vineyard on Sonoma Mountain by Blackbird Vineyards winemakers Aaron Pott and Kyle Mizuno. It offers an optimum fruit character balanced by fresh acidity, and each bottle boasts aromas and flavors of peach, apricot, lemon, almonds, shortbread cookie, nutmeg, and vanilla. It finishes long with a lingering flavor of ripe pear, citrus, and toffee. It makes for a crisp addition to a delightful poached salmon.

The Unreliable Narrator (from $75 — $800) is a limited-edition inaugural wine that taps into the zeitgeist of our current culture. Each label features artwork by the world’s most interesting artists, while inside the bottle holds bold and unique notes of plum, smoked duck, cola mince meat, tobacco, and black cherry. And tastes of briery blackberry, smoked meats, fennel sausage, brown sugar, and chocolate touch the palate—creating the perfect glass of wine on a cold night by the fire.

While both varieties tell different stories about our history—Daring Greatly celebrates those who found the courage to speak up, while Unreliable Narrator captures our sociopolitical climate of uncertainty—both of these collectible bottles should remind us all to stand—and sip—with a purpose.
