Amount raised: $22 million for scientists, physicists and mathematicians

awards— dubbed the “Oscars of Science”— summoned the likes of Morgan Freeman, who hosted the event, as well as celeb presenters Kerry Washington, Lily Collins, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, who once donned a black turtleneck to portray Steve Jobs in the 2013 film aptly titled: Jobs. Kutcher, meanwhile, has made a second career for himself as a venture capitalist, investing in companies such as Airbnb, Skype and Lemonade.

The event awarded $22 million to high achievers in physics, life sciences and mathematics, and was co-hosted by Breakthrough founders Sergey Brin, Yuri and Julia Milner, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Anne Wojcicki and Pony Ma. Of the recipients, Zuckerberg said: “The world needs their inspiration … we are making steady progress toward building a better future for everyone.”
